Brief History of Dolores
Dolores was founded in 1745 by Cardinal Luis Belluga, who drained and reclaimed marshlands along the Segura River to create productive agricultural land. The town was named Nuestra Señora de los Dolores (Our Lady of Sorrows) and planned as a model religious community, with its magnificent Baroque church as the centerpiece.
The impressive Church of Our Lady of Sorrows, built between 1745 and 1769, became one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture in the Valencian Community. Its grand façade and ornate interior reflected the cardinal's vision of creating a prosperous town centred on faith and agriculture. The surrounding lands quickly became productive, sustaining the growing community.
